The Transformative Effect of Digitalisation on the Work of
Traditional Legal Professions - Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives
7-8 November 2025, Győr, Hungary
The digitalisation of our lives and work over the last two decades has not left the work of lawyers unchanged. Solving simple legal problems no longer requires the assistance of a legal expert, and electronic forms and platforms make administrative procedures easier for every citizen. Self-executing algorithms and codes can replace written laws and thus law enforcement in several areas of social life, making the interpretive efforts of lawyers superfluous. Since 2023, we have witnessed the lightning-fast penetration of the application of large language models into all areas of intellectual work, including legal reasoning, which was previously considered a ‘deeply human performance’.
Although the future of the traditional legal professions in the light of these developments is rather unclear, it is not premature to conclude that members of the traditional legal professions must prepare themselves for fundamental changes in their activities.
The main contribution of the conference to this discourse is to present and discuss the results of empirical research in this area in order to shed light on the degree of digitalisation and AI penetration in the work of traditional legal practitioners. Instead of futuristic speculation, we want to focus on the real opportunities and risks that the digital challenge may bring to the work of lawyers.
However, our approach does not exclude, and indeed requires, contributions to the theoretical underpinnings of the digitalisation of traditional legal activities.
